Ti-20 wt. % Al, Ti-38 wt. % Al and Ti-63 wt. % Al were chosen according to Ti-Al phase diagram, because these chemical compositions represent Ti3Al, TiAl and TiAl3 phase, respectively. The effect of the amount of aluminium on the combustion temperatures, microstructure and phase composition was studied. Heating of compressed samples was observed by optical pyrometer to determine exothermic reaction which is associated with SHS reaction. It was found that reaction temperatures increased with increasing addition of aluminium as well as reaction time and the start of ignition. The expected dominant phases were determined in all systems after SHS reaction. However, other phases accompanied their formation. The largest variety of phases formed in Ti-38 wt. % Al system.
