The ongoing reactions between glass fibres and al-kaline environment lead to the dissolution and slowly decomposition of the fibres and consequently to the loss of the mechanical properties of the composite. Corrosion of glass fibres is characterized by weight loss, change of fibre diameter, reduction of mechanical properties and formation of mineral in-crustations on the surface of the fibre, which gradually leads to the formation of a continuous corrosion coating so called corrosion shell. Scanning electron microscopy was used to monitor the morphology of the fiber surface, and image analysis methods were used to evaluate morphological changes. Tests of mechanical properties (fibers - tensile test, composite materials - three-point bending and Charpy test) were used to confirm ongoing degradation processes due to the long-term influence of the alkaline envi-ronment on both types of glass fibers.
